Judy Klink

Judy Klink Blum writes to us all:

Hi again, I've been thinking of developing a form for us on filling out what we have done for 40 years. It is hard for me to realize it has been that long.

I was one of the first to be married and begin a family. Unfortunately it wasn't a successful marriage, though I stayed in the relationship to raise two sons. They are both happily married and live in the Bay Area.

I have worked and gone to school a lot! I have degrees in child development, with graduate degrees in education, school and career counseling, and counseling psychology.

When my husband was in grad school in Berkeley I worked at the deaf school as a counselor. We moved to Davis where we raised our children . I worked on campus in a childrens' lab school, stayed involved with my children and went to school. It was a very busy life.

I became a teacher for children with learning problems in Sacramento. I went on into school counseling. For 2 years I worked in an adolescent treatment center while training to be a therapist.

Presently, I am working half time as a school counselor in Sacramento. The children are Hmong, Lao, Vietnamese, Black, Ukranian, Russian, Hispanic, Caucasian and a mixture of other. I work closely with families and in the classrooms. I see children individually and in small groups. Some of the children are in high risk families who are drug users, HIV+ , have criminal records and are not working. Other families are working hard to improve their lives and the lives of their children.

My other career is as a therapist in Davis. I work with nine associates. We do contract work with employee assistance programs for the City of Davis, Woodland and the County. I also see private referrals and referrals through HMO's.

I do have spare time. I only work at the school during the school year. I have always been athletic. I swim, run, bike and even roller blade. I just began running this year. I run about 3 miles twice a week. The intensity of the workouts seem to balance the intensity of my jobs! I also like yoga and tai chi.

For a while I worked on a nearby farm and participated in a farmer's market.I enjoy traveling, and being in nature. I have been on one trip to France. One theatre tour of England and Scotland, and a back roads trip to Bali. One summer I spent 6 weeks in Mexico, living with a family and studying Spanish. I loved traveling in Mexico, but I did not come back bilingual.

I like attending cultural events at UCD, in the Bay Area, or whereever I am. I am a curious person and have explored meditation retreats around the world. I like to go to Tassahara in Carmel Valley. I long to travel more in the US.

This is probably way more than you wanted to know, but I have never been known to be short winded!. I'm actually a fairly quiet person. I like reading, walks in nature and being with my grandchildren. I still hope one day to remarry. In the meanwhile I feel lucky for the quality of life I have.

What about you???
